Well here we go then.

I’m going to use this blog to record the development of Flashteroids II AKA Laser Chief (LC). It’s a big project. It’s going to take a long time, but I’ll get it done – that’s a promise. If I won the lottery today I’d quit my job and be able to dedicate a serious amount of time to this, but until that happens it’s going to be just evenings and weekends. And out of those, I’m afraid I have to conduct a social life. And I also spend a lot of time on my other hobby: Photography.

All I can do is apologise to those Flashteroids fans who still occasionally email me asking about updates. I hope this blog will make the whole thing a lot more interactive. I want to discuss ideas – what’s working and what’s not working, and, when I get to a sufficiently advanced stage, post beta releases for testing. I’ll also post source code so you can fix my bugs for me, or at least it will encourage me to keep it nice and tidy!

Also, there’s more pressure on me to get on with it if people are watching!

Anyway, here’s s rundown of the work ahead (in no particular order):

  • Release of Flashteroids website
  • Release of Flashteroids 1.5+*
  • Development of graphic design style for LC
  • Tying down of gaming modes for LC
  • Developement of pseudo-AI for in-game enemies
  • Creating ActionScript 2.0 classes for in-game objects
  • Map design
  • Back-end PHP for scores / database activity
  • Composing music and sound-FX for LC
  • Tying it all together!
  • Testing and release

Anyway, that’s all for now.

*Flashteroids 1.5+ is a version based on the Flashteroids 1.2 game engine, with some enhancements. The enhanced FTR engine originally appeared in 2003 on a cover CD that came with Digit Magazine under the name Flashteroids 2003 Edition. I’ve nearly completed porting those enhancements across to the 1.2 game engine (the CD one wasn’t web-ready), cleaning up the design a bit and – most importantly – designing a whole new suite of level maps. It still looks a bit 2002 (before I learnt the design side of web design), but should be fun.
